Closing Volume

Abstract
Closing volume is an air volume at which the lower Independent zone airways close, by mechanical characteristics of the dependent part airway. Even in the normal state, the dependent part of the lung has higher blood flow and ventilation than non-dependent region, because of 1) hydrostatic pressure gradient, 2) weight of lung itself, and 3) collapse of small airway in the dependent part.
Therefore the measurement of the "closing volume" is widely used for the early detection of small airway obstructive disease.
The, advantages of the measuring test are:
1) it is suitable for use as a screening test and in epidemiologic studies because it does not require any equipment that is either extremely costoly or technically difficult to operate.
2) it is the most sensitive test of small air-wav function.
